What is CIP?

The Center for Intellectual Property (CIP) is an interdisciplinary development center focused on knowledge-based business founded in 2000 by Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg in collaboration with industry. Today Norwegian University of Science and Technology is also a univeristy partner. CIP is located in Göteborg, Sweden and collaborates with leading persons and organization from industry, academia, and government from around the world with the mission to transform knowledge into wealth and welfare.

At CIP we believe that the competitive advantage for the future, both in a global perspective, and for the Nordic region, will depend on the national and regional capacity to create and transform knowledge into assets, property, and capital.

The importance of research and innovation is well-known in general, but the critical role that intellectual asset and property management plays in the actual creation and extraction of value is not well-understood. CIP’s goal and vision is thus to raise awareness and develop tools and capabilities in this key field to support the creation of strategies and policies for industry, academia, and government that enhances competitiveness and the standard of living in the knowledge economy.

We envision the Center for Intellectual Property (CIP) as a strategic research and development center focused on intellectual property, innovation, and competitiveness in the knowledge economy. Currently CIP is structured as a center established by Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg with the following objectives:

  • Develop CIP into an international thought leader by partnering with world-leading individuals and organizations from industry, university, and government to build strategic collaborations that strengthen the vision and platform.
  • Create awareness of the link between the competitiveness in the knowledge economy and the development of a world-leading capacity to manage knowledge as intellectual assets, property, and capital.
  • Establish a research program focused on the key knowledge economy issues from a global perspective.
  • Create hands-on development projects together with industry, academia, government and other key stakeholders to exemplify and build practical capacity.
  • Establish a charter for universities for the training of students, faculty, and innovation advisors.
  • Develop world-class university education content for the undergraduate, graduate, and PhD level
  • Develop and deliver a portfolio of educational programs customized for different professional and executive stakeholder groups from industry and governmental organizations.

We believe that knowledge is the ultimate renewable resource from which to build sustainable wealth and welfare for the future. However, we acknowledge that the creation, control, and utilization of knowledge required to generate wealth and welfare is far from a simple task – this is why we have created CIP.
